New York - Founded in 1795 and first known as Payne's Settlement, the
Village of Hamilton celebrated its bicentennial in 1995.
It is located in the Town of
Hamilton in Madison County, New York
and is home to Colgate University.

The
Village
Hamilton is located in the
center of New York State on Route 12B,
just 20 miles south of the New York
State Thruway (I-90) and 30 miles east
of I-81. Homes, shops and a country inn
center on a village green that is the
site of a weekly farmer’s market.
Progressive leaders and the village’s
3,800 public-minded citizens ensure a
host of activities and services from a
community hospital, fire and ambulance,
to day care and a variety of public
celebrations. Public schools rank among
the area’s best. A full range of
medical services are available through
Community Memorial Hospital.
Colgate University’s
academic, cultural and athletic
resources are easily accessible. The
resources of the
State University of New
York’s College at Morrisville are ten
minutes away.
Hamilton is situated in the heart of New York State’s leatherstocking country, made famous in the writings of James Fenimore Cooper. In addition to the amenities of Hamilton itself, an easy hour’s drive takes one to Cooperstown with the Baseball Hall of Fame and Farmers’ Museum; Syracuse, home of Syracuse Stage and the Syracuse Symphony; Utica, with Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute and the Stanley Performing Arts Center; Bouckville, which annually hosts one of the largest antique festivals in the East; or the southern border of the Adirondack Park.

Driving:
From Syracuse take the New York State Thruway east to exit 34 (Canastota), Route 5 east to Oneida, and Route 46 South (across Route 20) to 12B south.
From Utica take the New York State Thruway west to exit 33 (Verona), Route 365 south to Route 5 west in Oneida, and Route 46 south (across Route 20) to 12B south.
Village Services
Fire/Police/Ambulance - Emergency phone number 911; non-emergency, 824-3333. The Hamilton Fire Department is made up of volunteers who are fully trained according to New York State law. The Police Department comprises a chief and three full-time officers.
Education - Hamilton Central School provides instruction from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Chenango Nursery School offers pre-school programs and day care. Hamilton is the home of Colgate University, founded in 1819 and coeducational since 1970. Colgate is a four-year independent liberal arts college with a small graduate program. Many of its programs and facilities are open to the public.
Medical - Community Memorial Hospital serves more than 20 area communities. Fully accredited, the hospital has 44 acute care beds and a 40-bed skilled nursing facility, two surgical suites and an 8-bay emergency room. Adjacent to the hospital is a satellite of Cooperstown's Bassett Hospital--Bassett Healthcare. Area specialists see Hamilton patients on specified dates.
Utilities - The Municipal Utilities Commission provides electric, water and sewage services. The village electric rate is among the lowest in the state. Water comes from wells located near the high school Annual Drinking Water Quality Report for 2002. Monthly statements include charges for all three services. Library - The Hamilton Public Library is affiliated with the Mid-York Library System and offers book cassettes and videos as well as fiction, non-fiction and periodicals.
Recreation - The village provides a summer recreation program for children which includes swimming instruction at the Colgate pool, tennis and crafts. Summer band concerts on the village green are also offered.
Churches - First Baptist Church, the Mother Church of Colgate, is the village's oldest church. Other houses of worship include Park United Methodist, St. Thomas' Episcopal, St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Hamilton Bible Fellowship, Cornerstone Baptist, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and Colgate Jewish Center.
Cemeteries - Woodlawn Cemetery is located off Lebanon Street and St. Joseph's Cemetery, maintained by St. Mary's Church, is on Route 12B north. Many of Hamilton's historical figures are buried in the Madison Street Cemetery, which is now closed. Colgate maintains a cemetery atop the hill.
